The story of slate

A history worth keeping

The first quarry in America opened in 1785. In 1850, Welsh immigrants arrived in Fair Haven, Vermont, and the region became the center of American slate.

Vermont and New York slate is special: it comes in green, gray, black, purple and red, a wider range of colors than anywhere else in the world.

Slate faded when cheap asphalt shingles took over. Today, interest in historic homes is bringing it back.
